Modern medicine is no longer limited to face-to-face appointments in major cities. Remote consultations are a fully-fledged and safe alternative for patients who live in regions outside Riga and Jūrmala, have mobility issues, are receiving care at home, or simply wish to save time and avoid long journeys. Dr Olīvija Caune provides professional video consultations using the Google Meet platform – you do not need to install any additional software or pay for an app; all you need is any web browser, a computer, tablet or smartphone with a camera and microphone. The video quality is more than adequate for carrying out a visual assessment and discussing your health concerns.

An online consultation covers exactly the same content as an in-person appointment:

• A detailed discussion of current symptoms, how they have changed over time and their daily pattern – thyroid problems often manifest in the morning, whilst fluctuations in blood sugar levels are noticeable after meals;
• Review of previous test results, examinations and X-ray images – please email these in advance to info@olivijacaune.lv so that the doctor can prepare for the consultation and make the most effective use of the time;
• Visual assessment via camera – skin condition, facial oedema, anterior neck circumference, eye expression and degree of exophthalmos, which may indicate thyrotoxicosis or hypothyroidism;
• Drawing up or amending a treatment plan, issuing prescriptions via the e-health system, and referring you for laboratory tests at the nearest centre to your place of residence;
• Detailed recommendations on lifestyle, diet, physical activity and medication schedules.

The online form is particularly convenient and popular amongst patients with type 2 diabetes who require regular assessment of their HbA1c and self-monitoring of blood glucose results, as well as for patients with chronic thyroid conditions, for whom, when on stable treatment, periodic monitoring of TSH and free T4 levels every 3–6 months is sufficient. The consultation lasts 30 minutes, which fully corresponds to the content and quality of an in-person appointment. Many patients note that a remote consultation is more convenient, as there is no need to set aside time for travel or to wait in a queue in the hospital waiting room.

Data security and confidentiality are a priority – Google Meet provides an encrypted connection, and all medical data is processed in accordance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Dr Caune does not make any recordings without the patient’s explicit consent. Following the consultation, you will receive an electronic summary containing the key findings, any changes to your treatment, a list of tests for your next appointment, and a recommendation for the date of your next appointment.
