Professional interpretation of blood test results and adjustment of treatment

Blood test results are key to the effective management and prevention of endocrine disorders; however, the figures on a laboratory report are only part of the overall clinical picture. Many patients try to interpret their TSH, glucose or vitamin D levels themselves, based on information found on internet forums, which can be misleading and even dangerous to their health. Reference ranges vary depending on age, gender, pregnancy status and any underlying conditions. Dr Olivia Caune helps you to correctly interpret your laboratory results, taking into account your age, gender, body mass index, any medication you are currently taking, dietary supplements and any underlying conditions. This consultation saves time, prevents incorrect self-medication and reduces the risk of complications in the future.

The most commonly assessed laboratory parameters in endocrinology:

  • Thyroid function – TSH, free T4 (FT4), free T3 (FT3), anti-thyroperoxidase antibodies (ATPO), anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (AT-TG), calcitonin;
  • Blood glucose control – fasting blood glucose, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), C-peptide, insulin, insulin resistance indices;
  • Bone metabolism – calcium, phosphorus, 25-OH vitamin D, parathyroid hormone (PTH), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BSAP), type 1 collagen C-terminal telopeptide (CTX);
  • Lipid profile – total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides, which are important for assessing metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular risk;
  • Hormone profile – cortisol, DHEA-S, prolactin, FSH, LH, oestradiol, testosterone, SHBG.

During the consultation, Dr Caune compares the new results in detail with previous test results, assesses the progress of treatment and, if necessary, adjusts medication doses. For patients with diabetes, the insulin dose or oral hypoglycaemic medication regimen is adjusted; whilst for patients with thyroid disorders, the dose of levothyroxine (Eutirox) or thiamazole is adjusted in line with current TSH and free T4 levels. All changes are documented in the e-health system, and you will receive clear verbal and written instructions.

Important: This service is available only in exceptional cases, subject to prior agreement with a doctor. It applies solely to the interpretation of laboratory results within the context of a single episode of illness. It is not possible to start new medication within this consultation format. If you require an initial or follow-up consultation involving a full examination and the development of a treatment plan, please select a standard consultation. Regular monitoring of blood test results is the foundation for the successful management of chronic endocrine conditions. For patients with diabetes, the American Diabetes Association recommends monitoring HbA1c every 3 months whilst therapy is being adjusted, and every 6 months once the condition is stable. In the case of thyroid disorders, a TSH check is required 6–8 weeks after starting treatment or changing the dose, and once a year once the condition is stable.

The consultation lasts up to 15 minutes, but the content is concise, professional and practical. To ensure the most efficient use of time, please email your test results to info@olivijacaune.lv or have them ready in electronic form before your appointment. Blood test reviews are available in person at Jūrmala Hospital and remotely throughout Latvia via the Google Meet platform, which is particularly convenient for busy people and those living outside Riga.
