When an urgent consultation with an endocrinologist is required
Some endocrine system problems cannot wait until your next scheduled appointment, which is in three weeks’ time. If you have a sudden rise in blood sugar levels above 13–14 mmol/l, or signs of severe thyroid dysfunction – such as palpitations, tremors, a high body temperature, or rapid weight changes of more than 3–4 kilograms per month – you require urgent assessment by a specialist. Please contact us immediately if your symptoms are affecting your ability to work, drive or carry out daily activities. Urgent consultations with an endocrinologist in Jūrmala are available to patients from across Latvia, including those living in Riga, Jūrmala, Tukums, Talsi and other neighbouring towns.
Urgent symptoms requiring immediate consultation with an endocrinologist:
- Diabetic ketoacidosis or suspected diabetic ketoacidosis – severe thirst, frequent urination, general weakness, nausea, vomiting, a smell of acetone on the breath;
- Thyrotoxicosis – a marked increase in heart rate to over 100 beats per minute, sweating, trembling hands, weight loss despite a good appetite, restlessness, insomnia;
- Hypothyroidism with severe symptoms – extreme fatigue, intolerance to the cold, swelling of the face and limbs, a hoarse voice, memory problems;
- An acute osteoporotic fracture or a high risk of fracture – severe bone pain following minimal trauma or a fall;
- Any sudden deterioration in a known endocrine condition that affects day-to-day functioning and general well-being.
Emergency consultations take place in person at Jūrmala Hospital or remotely, provided the patient’s well-being and condition allow it. A comprehensive analysis of the patient’s medical history is carried out, along with a detailed physical examination and, if necessary, urgent laboratory tests are arranged. Dr Caune works in collaboration with the diagnostics department at Jūrmala Hospital, which ensures that laboratory tests are carried out swiftly – results are often available on the same day, allowing treatment to be started or adjusted immediately.
Statistics show that timely intervention by an endocrinologist in acute situations can prevent serious complications and hospitalisation. For example, undiagnosed thyrotoxicosis can lead to a thyrotoxic crisis with heart failure, whilst uncontrolled blood sugar levels can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis, which requires admission to an intensive care unit. Dr Caune’s primary aim is to prevent these complications by providing care right from the earliest stages of the disease. Thanks to her many years of experience in both hospital and outpatient settings, she quickly recognises dangerous symptoms and makes the right decisions.
The price of this service reflects availability outside normal working hours, priority booking and the need to adjust Dr Caune’s schedule during the post-operative period.
