L-thyroxine (Eutirox) is one of the most commonly used medicines, but it is used incorrectly.
Common mistakes:
- Inappropriate time - should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before breakfast
- With calcium or iron - Reduces absorption by 30-40%
- Coffee straight after medicine - also reduces efficiency
- Forgotten doses - if forgotten in the morning, can be taken in the evening, but must be taken 4 hours apart from meals
- Self-interruption - even if you feel well, you have to take the medicine for life (in the case of hypothyroidism)
Tips from Dr Caune:
- If taking calcium or antacids - a difference of at least 4 hours
- During pregnancy, the dose should normally be increased by 25-30%
- The tests (TSH) must be carried out in the same laboratory
