What is osteoporosis and how can I treat it?

Osteoporosis is a systemic bone disease characterised by a decrease in bone mass and deterioration of bone structure, leading to an increased risk of fractures.

Risk factors:

  • Age (women over 50, men over 60)
  • Menopause at an early age
  • Prolonged use of corticosteroids
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Smoking and alcohol

Prevention and treatment:

  1. Bone density measurement (DXA scan)
  2. Correction of vitamin D and calcium levels
  3. Specific preparations (bisphosphonates, denosumab, etc.)
  4. Physical activity (walking, exercise)
  5. Fracture prevention (home safety)

Dr Caune specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.
